SAIS Magazine Winter 2018

WELCOME 14 8 The Media Restrained Johns Hopkins SAIS benefits tremendously from the volunteer leadership of its alumni. We commend outgoing Board of Advisors Chair Sara O’Hagan ’86 for her guidance and inspiring support over the past 10 years. Her energy and perspective made possible many impressive accomplishments that benefit our community. Sara passes the gavel to new board Co-Chairs Todd Fischer ’91 and Kathy Pike B’81, JHU’82, JHU’83. They will guide the next chapter of transformational study in international relations.   This issue of SAIS Magazine carries in-depth coverage of global flash points and the concerns and actors driving them. Foreign Policy Institute Senior Fellow Afshin Molavi ’97 provides analysis as he hails the wave of economic growth sweeping across Africa. PBS NewsHour Special Correspondent Nick Schifrin MIPP ’18, meanwhile, examines how new geopolitical pressures are affecting the media; he also covers the recent news about Greg Asbed ’90, the first SAISer to receive a MacArthur Fellows Program “genius grant.”   African Economy
